A convicted felon with 10 prior convictions was arrested after police raided Rep. Ilhan Omar’s son’s Minneapolis apartment and seized guns.
MINNEAPOLIS — A man with 10 prior convictions was arrested after Minneapolis police executed a search warrant at an apartment shared with the son of Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., where authorities reportedly recovered firearms and ammunition.
The arrest has drawn renewed attention because the suspect, Abdulrahman Abdi, was reportedly living with Omar’s son, Adnan Hirsi. However, authorities and Fox News have reported that Hirsi has not been accused of wrongdoing, and there is no indication that Omar was implicated in the investigation.
Police raid apartment shared by Omar’s son
The incident began after officers stopped Abdi during a traffic investigation on Aug. 25, according to reports.
Police cited him for driving-related violations, including driving after cancellation and failing to provide proof of insurance. His vehicle was impounded, and officers reportedly discovered a firearm inside.
Authorities subsequently went to the Minneapolis apartment where Abdi lived with Hirsi and executed a search warrant. Multiple firearms and ammunition were reportedly recovered from the residence.
Abdi was arrested on a weapons-related charge and booked into the Hennepin County jail, according to reporting on the incident.
Abdi has extensive criminal record
Court records reviewed by media outlets indicate that Abdi has accumulated 10 convictions since 2022, most involving driving offenses.
Among the convictions reported were speeding violations, driving after license revocation and other traffic-related offenses. Records also show a felony fleeing or eluding conviction, according to reporting based on court documents.
The criminal history has become a major focus of the controversy surrounding the arrest, particularly because Abdi was sharing an apartment with the congresswoman’s son.
Still, the distinction between Abdi’s alleged conduct and Hirsi’s status is important: there is no reported allegation that Omar’s son participated in the crimes or weapons offense. Fox News specifically reported that Hirsi had not been implicated in wrongdoing.
Ilhan Omar faces questions over incident
The police raid has also prompted political criticism directed at Omar, with critics questioning whether she would address the circumstances surrounding her son’s roommate.
The controversy comes as Omar remains one of the most prominent progressive Democrats in Congress and a frequent target of Republican criticism.
