DALLAS — Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., surprised Republicans and Democrats alike with a video appearance at the GOP’s midterm convention in Dallas, where he praised Republican Sen. Dave McCormick and pledged to work with President Donald Trump.
The unusual appearance immediately renewed questions about whether Fetterman could eventually leave the Democratic Party.
But the Pennsylvania senator has insisted he remains a Democrat, even as he increasingly breaks with members of his party on major political issues.
Fetterman calls himself a ‘common-sense Democrat’
Fetterman appeared in a prerecorded video Wednesday to introduce McCormick, his Republican Senate colleague from Pennsylvania.
Standing in front of a steel plant, Fetterman described himself as a “common-sense Democrat” and said he rejects political extremes and socialism.
He also emphasized his willingness to work with Republicans when he believes it benefits Pennsylvania.
Fetterman specifically highlighted the state’s steel industry, saying he would work with Trump to protect what he called the “steel way of life” in western Pennsylvania.
Surprise GOP appearance fuels speculation
A Democratic senator appearing at a Republican Party convention would be unusual under any circumstances.
Fetterman’s appearance was particularly striking because the Dallas event was organized to rally Republican voters ahead of the November midterm elections and featured Trump prominently.
