A missing Ohio teen was found alive at a former teacher’s home 263 days after she disappeared. The ex-teacher now faces a custody charge.
An Ohio teenager who disappeared nearly nine months ago has been found alive inside the Springfield home of a former teacher, bringing an extraordinary 263-day search to an end.
The girl, who was 16 when she disappeared and is now 17, was located on August 21, 2026, at the home of Jobe Binkley, 48, according to reports citing court documents and law enforcement information. She had reportedly vanished from a transitional living facility in Columbus on December 2, 2025.
Her discovery ended months of uncertainty for her family, but it also opened a new chapter in the case—one centered on why she was at Binkley’s home and what happened during the months she was missing.
Teen found after months-long search
Authorities located the teenager during an August 21 visit to Binkley’s Springfield residence involving an officer working with the U.S. Marshals Service.
According to a probable-cause affidavit cited by PEOPLE, Binkley acknowledged that the girl was inside the house and called for her to come out. Investigators had reportedly visited the property on two earlier occasions while searching for her, when Binkley allegedly denied that she was there.
The discovery came 263 days after the teenager was reported missing.
For a family waiting through that stretch of time, the number is more than a statistic. It represents months of unanswered questions, uncertainty and repeated attempts to determine whether their daughter was safe.
Former teacher faces custody charge
Binkley, a former science teacher with the Springfield City School District, was charged with one count of interference with custody, a first-degree misdemeanor.
He has pleaded not guilty and was released on bond. A pretrial hearing is scheduled for September 30, according to court information reported by PEOPLE.
The charge is narrower than some of the allegations circulating publicly about the case. Authorities have not announced that Binkley has been charged with kidnapping or a sexual offense involving the teenager.
That distinction is important.
While the circumstances surrounding the girl’s stay at the residence are under scrutiny, the criminal charge currently reported against Binkley concerns alleged interference with custody.
Questions remain about their relationship
One of the biggest unanswered questions is how the teenager and Binkley knew each other.
Reports have described Binkley as a former teacher, but authorities have not publicly established that he personally taught the teenager. PEOPLE reported that the nature of their relationship remained unclear.
Family members, however, have publicly raised more serious allegations.
Chelsi Warner, the mother of the teenager’s half-sister, told media outlets that relatives had previously suspected the girl might be staying at Binkley’s residence. The family has criticized the response to those concerns and questioned why authorities did not find her sooner.
Those allegations remain separate from the criminal charge filed against Binkley and have not been established as facts in court.
Binkley’s history with school district
Binkley was no longer working for Springfield City Schools when the teenager was found.
According to records cited by PEOPLE, the district placed him on administrative leave in November 2024 after concerns were raised about his professional interactions with students. The district said those allegations were ultimately unsubstantiated.
He was placed on leave again in January 2025 and was dismissed the following month over a policy violation involving technology use, according to the report. Springfield City Schools said it did not learn of allegations involving the missing teenager until after Binkley was no longer employed by the district.
A 263-day mystery now enters a new phase
The teenager’s safe recovery closes one painful chapter, but it does not answer every question.
Investigators now face the task of reconstructing what happened between December 2, 2025, and August 21, 2026—and determining what, if anything, occurred inside the Springfield home during that period.
For the family, the most immediate fact is that the long search ended with the teenager alive.
For prosecutors, the focus will shift to evidence, witness accounts and the circumstances behind the interference-with-custody allegation.
Binkley remains entitled to the presumption of innocence as the case moves forward. His next court appearance could provide more information about the allegations and the evidence authorities say supports the charge.
After 263 days, the search may be over. The investigation is not.
