TSA officers found a knife taped inside a traveler’s carry-on at a Wisconsin airport after she allegedly tried to avoid a $100 checked baggage fee.
A routine airport security screening took an alarming turn when a TSA officer spotted the outline of a knife hidden inside a passenger’s carry-on bag at a Wisconsin airport.
The incident occurred at Dane County Regional Airport in Madison, where TSA officers detected the suspicious item during an X-ray examination, according to the Transportation Security Administration.
The knife had reportedly been taped inside the luggage, prompting officers to conduct additional screening. The passenger later acknowledged that she had deliberately concealed the item from TSA.
Traveler tried to avoid $100 baggage fee
According to TSA, the passenger said she was planning an upcoming camping trip and wanted to bring the knife with her.
Rather than checking her luggage, she allegedly attempted to conceal the knife in her carry-on because she did not want to pay a $100 checked baggage fee.
TSA officers said the passenger did not believe the knife would be detected during screening.
The discovery led Supervisory TSA Officer Andrew Kasten to contact law enforcement. The Dane County Sheriff’s Office and TSA management responded to the security checkpoint.
TSA officers spot unusual X-ray image
TSA Officer Callie Meis, a 22-year veteran of the agency, initially flagged the bag for further inspection after noticing what appeared to be a knife on the X-ray image.
Kasten said officers have encountered knives accidentally hidden in luggage before, including items that slipped through holes in purses, bag liners or clothing pockets.
In this case, however, investigators determined that the knife had been intentionally secured with tape.
TSA officials said the incident demonstrates how additional screening can uncover items that passengers attempt to conceal.
Passenger allowed to continue traveling
The passenger voluntarily surrendered the knife and was ultimately cleared to travel, according to TSA.
The agency used the incident to remind travelers that attempting to conceal prohibited items can lead to serious consequences.
Kasten advised passengers to consider the potential penalties before attempting to save money by hiding an item in their luggage.
The incident serves as another reminder that carry-on bags are subject to detailed security screening and that X-ray technology can reveal unusual objects hidden inside luggage.
