Texas engineer Andrew Wimsatt was fatally stabbed on a park bench after visiting his mother. A suspect was arrested and charged with murder.
A 62-year-old Texas engineer was fatally stabbed while sitting on a park bench in what authorities describe as a seemingly random attack, shortly after he visited his elderly mother at a nearby nursing home.
Andrew James Wimsatt was killed Monday, Sept. 7, at Chandler Creek Park in Round Rock, Texas. Investigators say he and the man accused of killing him did not appear to know each other.
The case has drawn additional attention because Wimsatt had close ties to Fox News personalities, including Greg Gutfeld and Kat Timpf, who remembered him publicly following his death.
Engineer attacked moments after sitting down
According to investigators, Wimsatt had just visited his mother at a nearby nursing home before heading to the park.
He sat on a bench shortly after 11 a.m., where surveillance footage allegedly captured a man approaching him from behind.
Authorities say the suspect, identified as Benedict Chinedu Ogbodiegwu Jr., attacked Wimsatt with a knife.
Court documents cited in reports say Wimsatt attempted to defend himself but was unable to stop the assault. He was stabbed multiple times before collapsing.
Investigators believe the attack was random and that there was no known connection between the victim and suspect.
Suspect allegedly fled after killing
Authorities say Ogbodiegwu left the park after the stabbing.
Surveillance footage later placed him at a nearby McDonald’s, where investigators reportedly identified him several hours after the attack. Police then tracked him to his home, located roughly a mile from the park.
Investigators also recovered a bloodied knife from the residence, according to court records cited by news outlets.
When questioned, Ogbodiegwu allegedly denied being at the park and claimed that a twin brother was responsible, although investigators reportedly could not establish the existence of such a twin.
Ogbodiegwu was subsequently arrested and charged with murder.
Police say attack appears to be random
The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office said preliminary evidence indicates the victim and suspect were strangers.
“Based on preliminary evidence and information developed so far,” investigators believe the attack was a random act, according to a statement cited by People.
The finding has made the killing particularly disturbing to people who knew Wimsatt, who appeared to have been targeted without any apparent prior dispute.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack.
Wimsatt remembered for kindness
Beyond his engineering career, Wimsatt was remembered by friends and acquaintances for his generosity and willingness to help others.
Wimsatt was a retired civil engineer with a doctorate who had worked with the Texas A&M Transportation Institute. He was also known among the Fox News community and regularly appeared around the network’s personalities and events.
Gutfeld spoke emotionally about Wimsatt following his death, describing the killing as shocking and saying he initially struggled to comprehend what had happened.
Gutfeld also said Wimsatt was a fan of his show and emphasized his willingness to help people simply because he enjoyed being of service.

Wimsatt’s connections to Fox News helped bring additional attention to the case.
Reports said he had developed friendships with Gutfeld and Timpf and was a familiar figure among the extended circle surrounding Gutfeld’s program.

The circumstances have also intensified concerns about random violence in public spaces.
Suspect’s criminal history under scrutiny
The arrest has prompted additional attention to Ogbodiegwu’s background.
The New York Post reported that the suspect had a criminal history in Williamson County dating back to 2017 and had been released from jail in June 2026.
He remains in custody as the murder case moves through the court system.
Any allegations against Ogbodiegwu remain accusations unless established in court.
