DALLAS — Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., is putting to rest speculation that he could leave the Democratic Party after making a surprise appearance at the Republican Party’s midterm convention in Dallas.
Fetterman appeared in a video message Wednesday night to introduce fellow Pennsylvania Sen. Dave McCormick, a Republican seeking reelection. The unusual appearance immediately fueled questions about whether the outspoken Democrat was moving closer to the GOP.
But Fetterman subsequently made clear that, despite his increasingly independent approach and willingness to work with Republicans, he still considers himself a Democrat.
Fetterman calls himself a ‘lifelong Democrat’
In a statement to Fox News, Fetterman emphasized that his appearance at the Republican convention should not be interpreted as a decision to leave his party.
The Pennsylvania senator described himself as a “lifelong Democrat” and said he votes overwhelmingly with Democrats.
He also offered a glimpse of where his loyalty would lie if Democrats regain control of the Senate in November.
Fetterman said that if the Senate flips, he would remain the 51st Democratic vote — a statement that appeared designed to shut down speculation about a potential party switch.
Surprise GOP appearance raises eyebrows
Fetterman’s appearance was nevertheless highly unusual for a sitting Democratic senator.
Standing in front of a Pennsylvania steel mill, he praised McCormick and President Donald Trump for their support of the state’s steel industry.
“I’m a commonsense Democrat,” Fetterman said during the video. He also rejected what he characterized as the Democratic Party’s “extremes and socialism.”
He introduced McCormick as a senator who gets the job done and someone who would fight for Pennsylvania.
Fetterman also described McCormick as a friend despite the two belonging to opposing political parties.
Fetterman says he will work with Trump
The senator’s comments went beyond praise for his Republican colleague.
Fetterman said he was prepared to work with Trump on protecting Pennsylvania’s steel industry, a major economic and political issue in the state.
The remarks highlight the senator’s increasingly bipartisan approach on several issues.
Reuters reported that Fetterman has broken with fellow Democrats on matters including Israel, immigration and Trump’s military actions involving Iran.
