DALLAS — Republicans are making an unprecedented move with the 2026 midterm elections approaching, putting President Donald Trump at the center of the party’s first-ever midterm convention as the GOP seeks to protect its narrow majorities in Congress.
The Republican National Committee’s historic gathering in Dallas, Texas, begins Wednesday, with Trump scheduled to headline both nights of the event. The strategy is straightforward: use the president’s political star power to energize Republican voters and drive turnout in key House and Senate races.
RNC Chairman Joe Gruters described Trump as the “best showman in politics” and said Republicans are effectively putting the president “on the ballot” through the convention.
The event comes less than two months before Election Day, with early voting approaching in several states. Republicans are facing energized Democrats while attempting to defend their slim control of both chambers of Congress.
Republicans turn to Trump’s star power
One of the biggest challenges facing Republicans is turnout among voters who are less likely to participate in midterm elections.
Trump’s name will not appear on the November ballot, raising concerns within the GOP that some of his supporters could stay home. Republican leaders believe putting Trump front and center can help recreate the enthusiasm that has powered his previous campaigns.
“We are putting the president on the ballot,” Gruters said in an interview with Fox News Digital, emphasizing the convention’s role in the party’s midterm strategy.
Republicans have dubbed the event a “Trumpapalooza,” underscoring just how heavily the party is relying on the president to energize its base.
The strategy also reflects Trump’s continued influence over the Republican Party. Rather than treating the midterms as a collection of individual congressional races, GOP leaders are attempting to turn the elections into a broader referendum on the Trump administration and its agenda.
Trump to headline both nights
Trump is scheduled to deliver the keynote address Wednesday evening at the American Airlines Center in downtown Dallas.
He will return Thursday to close out the convention after Vice President JD Vance delivers the second night’s keynote speech.
The gathering is unusual because national party conventions traditionally take place during presidential election years. The Republican midterm convention is designed instead to showcase the administration’s accomplishments, energize supporters and give congressional candidates a larger national platform.
The Texas event also gives Republicans an opportunity to begin a broader campaign effort ahead of November. Party officials have indicated that Trump will play a major role in efforts to mobilize voters in competitive districts around the country.
A high-stakes test for the GOP
The stakes are particularly high because Republicans currently hold only narrow majorities in the House and Senate.
That leaves the party with little room for error. A relatively small number of competitive races could determine which party controls Congress after the midterms.
For Republicans, the Dallas convention represents an attempt to turn Trump’s personal popularity and ability to command attention into votes for candidates farther down the ballot.
