Social Security COLA Projection: 2027 Raise Nears
Social Security COLA Projection: 2027 Raise Nears as beneficiaries await the official increase announcement scheduled October 14.
Current estimates place the 2027 COLA near 3.5% to 3.6%, while September inflation will determine the final percentage.
Recent projections differ slightly, with estimates clustering around 3.5% and 3.6% before the final inflation figure arrives.
These projections remain estimates because the September CPI-W reading has not yet been released for the calculation.
October Announcement Will Set the Final Increase
The Social Security Administration uses July, August, and September CPI-W figures to calculate each annual cost-of-living adjustment.
Two months of required inflation data are already available, leaving September’s figure to complete the calculation process.
The official announcement is expected October 14, when September inflation data provide the final figure for calculation.
Once announced, the new COLA will apply to Social Security benefits beginning with payments issued January 2027.
Current Social Security Payments Continue
Social Security payments continue through October under the regular schedule, while beneficiaries await the upcoming COLA announcement.
Most retirement beneficiaries receive payments according to birth dates, while some recipients follow different schedules established by Social Security.
SSI recipients can also receive two payments during October because November’s first payment date falls on a weekend.
What the Projection Could Mean
A 3.5% increase would raise a $2,000 monthly benefit by approximately $70 before other changes affect payments.
A 3.6% increase would raise the same $2,000 benefit by approximately $72 before deductions and adjustments.
Actual monthly deposits can differ because Medicare premiums, taxes, and other deductions may affect net benefit amounts.
The final percentage will become official only after September’s CPI-W data complete the legally established calculation formula.
Beneficiaries Await the Final Number
Until that announcement, beneficiaries should treat every published projection as an estimate rather than a guaranteed payment increase.
The upcoming inflation report therefore remains the key data point for determining next year’s Social Security increase.
