Kate Upton, Verlander Close Out MLB Power Couple Era as Justin Verlander officially brings his remarkable 21-year MLB career to an end with the Detroit Tigers.
The baseball star was honored at Comerica Park on Sept. 25, with Upton and their two children, Genevieve and Bellamy, alongside him for the emotional career celebration.
Justin Netherlander’s MLB Career Comes to an End
Verlander finished his career after more than two decades in the major leagues, closing the book on one of the most decorated pitching careers of his generation.
The 43-year-old announced in July that the 2026 season would be his final one. He said he wanted the game itself to tell him when it was time to step away.
His career included three Cy Young Awards, an American League MVP, 10 All-Star selections and two World Series championships.
A Final Moment in Detroit
Verlander’s final chapter fittingly came with the Detroit Tigers, the organization that drafted him and where his MLB journey began.
During his career celebration, he reflected on the time he spent away from his family while playing and traveling across the country.
He said becoming a husband and father changed his perspective and gave him a different outlook on his career and life.
Kate Upton and Netherlander’s Baseball Love Story
Upton and Verlander first met in 2012 while working on a commercial connected to the MLB 2K12 video game.
Their relationship eventually became one of the most recognizable pairings in professional baseball and entertainment.
After dating on and off, the couple became engaged in 2016 and married in Tuscany in November 2017. They later welcomed daughter Genevieve and son Bellamy.
Upton Was There Through the MLB Years
Throughout Verlander’s career, Upton frequently appeared alongside him at major baseball events, including All-Star festivities and postseason celebrations.
Their public appearances became familiar to baseball fans, particularly during Verlander’s years with the Detroit Tigers and Houston Astros.
The couple also celebrated some of Verlander’s biggest accomplishments together, including his World Series victories with Houston.
The End of an MLB Era
Verlander’s retirement does not mark the end of his relationship with Upton, but it does close an unusually long chapter in which the pair were closely connected to the MLB spotlight.
Their final All-Star red carpet appearance came earlier in 2026, when Verlander was selected as an All-Star Legend Pick during his final season.
Now, with Verlander’s playing career finished, the couple’s connection to MLB will look different.
A New Chapter for Verlander and Upton
Verlander leaves baseball with 266 career wins and 3,554 strikeouts, numbers that place him among the most accomplished pitchers in MLB history.
For Upton, the end of Verlander’s playing career also means the conclusion of more than a decade of life closely intertwined with the MLB schedule.
After years of games, travel, postseason runs and baseball ceremonies, Verlander can now spend more time with Upton and their children as the family enters a new stage beyond his playing career.
