Billy Gardell says weight-loss surgery “probably saved my life” after years of health struggles pushed the Mike & Molly star to make a major change and rethink his approach to his health.
Billy Gardell opens up about his transformation
Gardell, known for his role as Mike Biggs on Mike & Molly, has spoken openly about the dramatic change in his health over the past several years.
The actor and comedian has lost roughly 170 pounds after reaching a weight of around 370 to 380 pounds. His health struggles included type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and sleep apnea.
Gardell has said the COVID-19 pandemic became a turning point because he realized his weight and other health problems placed him at increased risk.
Surgery became a turning point
Gardell underwent bariatric surgery in 2021. He has credited the procedure with helping him make a dramatic change, while also stressing that surgery itself was only the beginning.
He previously described his surgeon as someone who “changed and saved my life,” while emphasizing that lasting results required major changes to his lifestyle and mindset.
The surgery was not the whole solution
Gardell has repeatedly explained that he did not view bariatric surgery as a quick fix.
Before the procedure, he had tried numerous approaches to losing weight but struggled with a cycle of losing weight and gaining it back.
He eventually realized that changing his relationship with food and committing to healthier habits would be essential if he wanted the weight loss to last.
Gardell changed his daily routine
Following surgery, Gardell adopted a more structured approach to eating and exercise.
He has discussed focusing on portion control, protein-rich meals, hydration and regular workouts. He also allows himself occasional foods he enjoys while trying to maintain balance rather than returning to old habits.
The comedian has said consistency has become an important part of maintaining his progress.
His health has improved dramatically
Gardell’s transformation has involved more than a change in appearance.
He has reported that his diabetes is gone and that he now has more energy and feels stronger. In 2025, he said his weight had stabilized around 210 to 215 pounds.
For Gardell, the improvement has also been about being present for the people closest to him.
Family helped motivate his decision
Gardell has credited his wife, Patty, and their son, Will, with giving him an important reason to take his health more seriously.
During the pandemic, he said the possibility of not being there for his family became a powerful motivation to change.
That realization helped push him toward surgery and the lifestyle changes that followed.
A lifelong commitment to staying healthy
Although Gardell has celebrated his weight-loss success, he has made clear that maintaining it remains an ongoing process.
He has described the transformation as a combination of surgery, nutrition, exercise and changes in his mindset.
For the Mike & Molly star, the biggest lesson has been that a medical procedure can provide an important starting point, but maintaining better health requires continued commitment.
Gardell’s story now stands as a significant personal transformation, with the comedian continuing to focus on staying active, maintaining his weight and making the most of the healthier life he has built.
