President Donald Trump announces an immediate White House ban against CNN, MS NOW, and Politico over alleged fake news reporting.
Trump Bans CNN, MS NOW, and Politico From White House Grounds
In a sharp escalation between the administration and national news organizations, President Donald Trump announced that journalists from CNN, MS NOW, and Politico will be barred from entering White House grounds.
The move, effective immediately, targets the three prominent outlets over what the president described as persistent coverage unfair to his administration.
Announcement via Truth Social and Oval Office Comments
President Trump revealed the policy in a post on Truth Social, directly naming the organizations involved:
“I am proud to announce that, effective immediately, I am banning Fake News CNN, MSNOW … and Politico … from the White House as a result of their constant ‘reporting’ FAKE NEWS!”
Addressing reporters in the Oval Office shortly after, Trump cited “cumulative stories” published by the outlets over recent years to justify the restriction. When asked whether the action was intended to intimidate journalists, Trump denied the claim, arguing that media outlets should not be permitted to publish inaccurate material continuously without consequence.
Reactions from News Outlets and First Amendment Concerns
The targeted media organizations responded swiftly, defending their journalistic standards and invoking First Amendment protections:
- CNN released a statement asserting its full support for its press team and emphasized its rights under the U.S. Constitution:”We have a right under the U.S. Constitution to do that reporting without hindrance or interference from the government. Should the ban which President Trump threatened go ahead, it would be an illegal assault on that fundamental and constitutionally-protected right.”
- Politico stated that it would continue to cover the administration fairly while “vigorously defending” its First Amendment rights against governmental restrictions.
- MS NOW declined to comment on the announcement.
The decision introduces immediate logistical challenges. CNN was previously selected to manage the rotating TV network pool coverage for President Trump’s upcoming appearance at the United Nations General Assembly.
Legal Precedent and White House Defense
The White House official position maintains that the president remains exceptionally open to press engagement. Former Press Secretary and current Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, present during the Oval Office briefing, rejected assertions that the administration opposes press freedom, noting the high level of direct access reporters have to the president.
Historically, attempts by presidential administrations to revoke press credentials or restrict access to specific journalists and news outlets have faced immediate challenges in federal court, where judges have consistently blocked government efforts to bar journalists based on editorial coverage.
