Tony Reno Dies at 52 After Yale’s Five Ivy Titles, closing a remarkable coaching chapter at Yale.
Yale coach Tony Reno died Friday at 52 after health issues forced his resignation earlier this year.
Reno led Yale for 14 seasons, winning five Ivy League championships and 83 games before stepping down.
His final season produced another championship and Yale’s first automatic FCS playoff berth in school history.
Reno Built a Championship Program
Reno guided Yale to championships in 2017, 2019, 2022, 2023, and 2025 during his tenure at Yale.
Those five titles helped establish Reno among Yale football’s most accomplished modern coaches during his fourteen seasons.
Reno arrived as Yale’s head coach in 2012 after coaching roles with Yale, Harvard, and Worcester State.
During his tenure, Yale consistently competed near the top of Ivy League standings under Reno’s leadership.
The Bulldogs defeated Harvard seven times across Reno’s final nine meetings with the Crimson during his tenure.
His 83 career victories rank second in Yale history, behind legendary coach Carm Cozza’s all-time program record.
Historic 2025 Season
Yale’s 2025 campaign became especially memorable after the Ivy League received its first automatic FCS playoff berth.
The Bulldogs won the conference title before completing a comeback against Youngstown State during their postseason debut.
Yale erased a 42-14 deficit before winning 43-42, securing the program’s first postseason victory in program history.
The Bulldogs later lost to Montana State in the next round, finishing the season ranked 13th nationally.
Reno’s Lasting Legacy
Beyond championships, Reno emphasized mentorship, academic achievement, leadership, and personal development throughout his coaching career at Yale.
Several Yale players earned major honors during his tenure, including six recipients of the Asa Bushnell Cup.
Reno also helped develop players who later continued professional football careers, including NFL standout Foyesade Oluokun professionally.
Family Remembers Reno
Reno is survived by his wife Toni and children Dante, Angelina, and Vince, according to Yale officials.
His son Dante Reno played quarterback for Yale during the Bulldogs’ historic 2025 championship season at quarterback.
Yale officials remembered Tony Reno for humility, compassion, mentorship, and lasting commitment to every player he coached.
The football community remembers Reno through championships, relationships, and generations of players shaped by his leadership there.
