Patrick Mahomes returned from a serious knee injury with a 15-yard touchdown run, sending a strong warning to the NFL in the Chiefs’ opener.
Patrick Mahomes wasted little time answering the biggest question surrounding the Kansas City Chiefs.
Nine months after suffering a torn ACL and LCL in his left knee, Mahomes returned to the field Monday night and immediately showed that his legs were still a major part of his game.
On the Chiefs’ opening offensive drive against the Denver Broncos, Mahomes scrambled for a 15-yard touchdown, punctuating his comeback with a dive into the end zone.
The play was significant not only because it put Kansas City on the scoreboard, but because Mahomes looked comfortable relying on the surgically repaired knee.
Mahomes sends an early message
There had been understandable questions about whether Mahomes would be willing to run aggressively after the devastating knee injury that ended his 2025 season.
Those concerns appeared to disappear quickly.
Mahomes took off up the middle, navigated through the defense and reached the end zone on the Chiefs’ first possession. The touchdown came exactly nine months after his injury, making the moment even more striking.
The performance suggested that Kansas City’s quarterback was not planning to completely abandon one of the elements that has made him so difficult for defenses to contain.
Chiefs dominate Broncos in Mahomes’ return
Mahomes’ return ultimately ended with Kansas City rolling past Denver 31-10 at Arrowhead Stadium.
He finished with 184 passing yards and two touchdown passes while adding another score on the ground. Kenneth Walker III also delivered a huge performance, rushing for 173 yards and two touchdowns in his Chiefs debut.
The combination gives Kansas City reason for optimism after a disappointing 2025 campaign.
Rather than asking Mahomes to carry the offense by himself, the Chiefs appeared to have a dynamic running game capable of taking pressure off their star quarterback.
The NFL should be paying attention
The most encouraging part of Mahomes’ return may have been the way he moved.
Quarterbacks coming back from major knee injuries often face questions about mobility, confidence and whether they will be willing to make the same plays they did before surgery.
Mahomes answered at least some of those questions on the opening drive.
His touchdown run showed that he was comfortable planting, cutting and accelerating toward the end zone. He also finished the night with seven carries for 23 yards, including the touchdown.
For an NFL already familiar with Mahomes’ passing ability, the possibility of a healthy and confident version of his rushing game returning is a troubling development for opposing defenses.
Kansas City looks dangerous again
The Chiefs entered the season facing plenty of uncertainty after finishing 2025 with a 6-11 record, their worst season in more than a decade.
Mahomes’ injury was a major factor in that difficult campaign, and his return was closely watched as Kansas City attempted to reestablish itself as an AFC contender.
The season opener could hardly have gone better.
Kansas City not only got its franchise quarterback back, but also watched Walker provide a legitimate explosive threat in the backfield. Travis Kelce added 71 receiving yards, including a 59-yard catch that helped keep the Chiefs’ offense moving.
That is a combination that should command attention around the league.
Mahomes still has something to prove
One game does not erase the concerns surrounding a major knee injury.
Mahomes will still have to prove that his knee can withstand the physical demands of a full NFL season, particularly as the hits and workload accumulate.
But his opening-night performance offered perhaps the clearest possible answer to the question of whether he was ready to play.
He did not look like a quarterback trying to protect his knee.
He looked like Patrick Mahomes.
And if that version of Mahomes is truly back, the rest of the NFL has plenty of reason to be concerned.
