Inside George Lucas’s New $1 Billion Galaxy

George Lucas’s $1B Lucas Museum of Narrative Art opens in Los Angeles, showing there is far more to his creative vision than ‘Star Wars’.

Making Sense of George Lucas’s New Billion-Dollar Galaxy

LOS ANGELES — After nearly two decades of planning, site shifts, and construction, filmmaker George Lucas and his wife, Mellody Hobson, have officially opened the doors to the long-anticipated Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles.

Costing more than $1 billion and fully funded by the couple, the futuristic 300,000-square-foot institution designed by architect Ma Yansong stands as a monumental physical monument to visual storytelling. Yet, for a creator best known for launching a galaxy far, far away, the museum’s most striking revelation is how little space is actually dedicated to Star Wars.

A Temple to ‘The People’s Art’

Rather than serving as a vanity project or a corporate shrine to his legendary sci-fi saga, Lucas designed the museum to elevate visual art forms that traditional fine-art institutions have historically ignored. Dubbed by Lucas as a “temple to the people’s art,” the 35 galleries blend high art and popular illustration side by side.

Exhibits seamlessly bridge fine art with popular media, showcasing works by Frida Kahlo, Norman Rockwell, Diego Rivera, and Banksy alongside original comic book strips, children’s book illustrations, and cinematic conceptual designs.

“The emotional connection to a story or image makes it meaningful, regardless of its traditional artistic status,” Lucas’s vision emphasizes. “It’s about how humans have told stories through pictures across generations.”

Where Star Wars Fits in the Universe

While Star Wars isn’t the main attraction, fans won’t walk away disappointed. The dedicated Star Wars in Motion gallery displays prized artifacts from the original six films, including Luke Skywalker’s Landspeeder, original character concept paintings, and iconic screen-worn costumes.

However, by positioning these pop-culture relics in conversation with centuries of global illustration, murals, and myth-making, Lucas grounds his cinematic legacy within the broader, universal history of visual narrative.
