Kenneth Walker III announced his arrival in Kansas City with a monster performance as the Chiefs dominated the Denver Broncos 31-10 on Monday Night Football.
The former Seattle Seahawks star rushed for a career-high 173 yards and scored two touchdowns, including a spectacular 60-yard run, while Patrick Mahomes added three touchdowns in his return from a major knee injury.
For Denver, quarterback Bo Nix endured a night to forget as the Broncos’ offense struggled to move the ball and committed costly turnovers.
Kenneth Walker takes over
Walker immediately looked like the centerpiece Kansas City hoped it had acquired.
He carried the ball 23 times for 173 yards, averaging more than 7 yards per carry. He also caught three passes for 18 yards, giving him 191 total yards — more than Denver’s entire offense produced.
His biggest play came early in the second half.
On fourth-and-1, Walker broke free for a 60-yard touchdown that pushed Kansas City’s advantage to 21-7 and effectively shifted the game into the Chiefs’ control.
Walker later added a second touchdown reception from Mahomes, putting the finishing touch on a remarkable debut.
Mahomes returns with three TDs
The night was also about Mahomes’ long-awaited return.
Nine months after suffering a torn ACL and LCL, the Chiefs quarterback returned to regular-season action and showed little hesitation when given the opportunity to run.
Mahomes scored on a 15-yard scramble on Kansas City’s opening drive before throwing touchdown passes to Rashee Rice and Walker. He finished 15-of-27 for 184 yards, two passing touchdowns and one interception, while adding 23 rushing yards and a score.
The performance was not perfect, but it gave Kansas City plenty of reason for optimism.
Bo Nix struggles under pressure
The Broncos never found an answer for Kansas City’s defense.
Nix completed 17 of 28 passes for 131 yards and one touchdown, but he also threw an interception and lost a fumble. The Chiefs recorded four sacks and repeatedly disrupted Denver’s offense.
Denver managed only 176 total yards and nine first downs.
The Broncos also struggled to establish their running game, finishing with just 15 rushing attempts for 61 yards.
Chiefs dominate on the ground
Kansas City’s rushing attack was the biggest difference between the teams.
The Chiefs ran for 220 yards on 38 attempts, repeatedly controlling the line of scrimmage and keeping pressure off Mahomes as he worked his way back into game form.
That balance allowed Kansas City to dictate the pace.
Walker provided the explosive plays, while Mahomes’ mobility and passing ability forced Denver to defend every area of the field.
Denver’s offense never recovered
The Broncos briefly answered Mahomes’ opening touchdown when Nix connected with Evan Engram for a 19-yard score to tie the game at 7-7.
But Kansas City responded with a long touchdown drive before halftime, then opened the third quarter with Walker’s 60-yard touchdown.
Denver’s chances became even slimmer after Nix’s second turnover helped set up another Chiefs scoring opportunity.
By the fourth quarter, Kansas City had turned the game into a comfortable 31-10 victory.
Chiefs send an early warning
Kansas City entered the season looking to rebound after a disappointing 6-11 campaign and a missed playoff berth.
The victory over Denver offered an immediate statement.
Mahomes looked capable of leading the offense again, while Walker gave the Chiefs a dynamic running back who can take pressure off their superstar quarterback.
For Denver, the loss raises questions about an offense that entered the season with high expectations.
The Broncos will have an opportunity to respond next week, but Monday night belonged completely to Kansas City.
With Walker running wild and Mahomes back on the field, the Chiefs may have reminded the NFL that they are not finished just yet.
