A Maryland couple is facing child abuse, assault and reckless endangerment charges after their 2-month-old daughter died from severe head and brain injuries, according to police and charging documents.
The infant, identified as Aida Mikea Monzon Alvarado, was taken to a Baltimore hospital after becoming unresponsive. Doctors discovered extensive injuries, including multiple skull fractures and brain hemorrhaging, prosecutors said.
Father allegedly blamed Satan
According to charging documents, the baby’s father, 21-year-old Oscar Pineda, allegedly told police that a supernatural force or “Satan” had caused his daughter’s injuries.
The allegation emerged during a court hearing as prosecutors detailed the conflicting explanations given by the child’s parents. Pineda and the baby’s mother, 21-year-old Katerin Monzon-Alvarado, have both been arrested and charged in connection with the infant’s death.
The claims remain allegations. Neither parent has been convicted in the case.
Infant suffered severe head injuries
The baby was brought to Harbor Hospital after becoming unresponsive, with doctors initially observing suspicious bruising around her eyes and jawline.
A subsequent medical examination revealed what prosecutors described as significant head and brain trauma. The charging documents cited multiple skull fractures, frontal lobe hemorrhaging and a subdural hemorrhage.
The severity of the injuries prompted investigators to examine how the infant was hurt and whether the explanations provided by her parents were consistent with the medical evidence.
Mother offered a different explanation
Prosecutors said Monzon-Alvarado gave investigators a different account of what may have happened.
According to court reporting, she suggested that the couple’s 2-year-old son, who reportedly jumps on the bed, could have caused the infant to fall onto the floor.
An assistant city state’s attorney argued in court that the extent of the baby’s injuries could not have been caused by a single fall from a bed.
Police said the mother initially told investigators that the baby became unresponsive while lying face down on a bed after being fed.
Parents face multiple charges
Pineda and Monzon-Alvarado are facing first- and second-degree child abuse, first- and second-degree assault and reckless endangerment charges, according to Baltimore police.
The charges carry a potential maximum sentence of 55 years in prison, Fox News reported. Prosecutors said additional homicide charges could be considered depending on the outcome of the autopsy.
The couple appeared separately in court and was ordered held without bail, according to local reporting.
Investigation continues
The infant’s death remains under investigation as authorities await further forensic findings.
The case has centered on the stark contrast between the parents’ accounts and the medical evidence documented by investigators. Authorities will ultimately have to determine what caused the baby’s fatal injuries and whether additional charges are warranted.
For now, Pineda and Monzon-Alvarado remain accused of crimes related to their daughter’s death. The allegations presented in charging documents have not been proven in court.
