A multistate manhunt for two people accused of a deadly North Carolina family shooting ended in Ohio after their vehicle crashed during a police pursuit, authorities said.
Gaston County, North Carolina, authorities identified Camryn Moore, 26, and Cory Armstrong, 29, as suspects in a shooting that left two people dead and two others critically injured inside a family home.
The victims were identified as Victoria “Heather” Moore, 50, and Megan “Josiah” Bumgardner, 38. Investigators said the two surviving victims were in critical but stable condition.
Suspects fled after deadly North Carolina shooting
Police said Moore and Armstrong allegedly fled Gaston County after the shooting. Detectives later obtained warrants charging both suspects with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted first-degree murder.
The U.S. Marshals Service Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force joined local investigators in tracking the suspects across state lines.
The search eventually led authorities to Ohio, where state troopers spotted the suspects’ vehicle near Athens at about 8 a.m. Friday.
Troopers attempted to stop the vehicle, but authorities said the suspects refused to pull over, triggering a pursuit through multiple counties.
Police hear gunshots after crash
The pursuit ended when the suspects’ vehicle swerved to avoid spike strips deployed on the roadway and crashed, according to authorities.
Officers then reported hearing two gunshots coming from the wrecked vehicle.
Law enforcement used a drone to inspect the crashed vehicle and discovered that both Moore and Armstrong were dead.
Authorities have not said who fired the shots or officially determined how the two suspects died. The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating the pursuit, crash and deaths.
Investigation into family shooting continues
Although the manhunt ended with the deaths of the two suspects, investigators in North Carolina said the underlying investigation remains active.
Police have not disclosed what may have prompted the violence at the Gaston County home. Authorities previously described the shooting as an isolated incident and said they did not believe there was an ongoing threat to the broader community.
The case drew a major law enforcement response as investigators tracked the suspects hundreds of miles from the original crime scene.
Gaston County police are continuing to seek information about the shooting and events leading up to the deadly violence.
