Hunter Biden’s $LAPTOP meme coin plunged after launch, leaving buyers with losses while a mystery trader reportedly pocketed roughly $930,000 online!
Hunter Biden’s cryptocurrency experiment has suffered a dramatic collapse, with his $LAPTOP meme coin losing most of its value shortly after launching and leaving many investors facing steep losses.
The token briefly surged after its debut before plunging, while one mystery trader reportedly turned an investment of about $250,000 into roughly $1.18 million. That represents an estimated profit of approximately $930,000 before transaction costs, according to blockchain analysis cited in reports.
The rapid rise and fall has triggered accusations of a possible “rug pull” from critics, although there is no evidence establishing that Hunter Biden or the project’s other principals deliberately orchestrated a fraudulent scheme.
$LAPTOP coin plunges after explosive debut
Hunter Biden launched the $LAPTOP token on September 9, using the cryptocurrency as a reference to the laptop that became a major political controversy during the 2020 presidential campaign.
The coin initially attracted significant attention and trading activity. Its price surged dramatically before collapsing within a short period.
Reports show the token fell by roughly 95% to 98% from its early peak, depending on the point of comparison. One report said $LAPTOP briefly traded above $300 before falling to just a few dollars.
The sharp decline left approximately four out of five buyers with losses, according to reporting on the token’s trading activity.
Mystery trader makes nearly $1 million
While most investors were losing money, one anonymous trader appears to have timed the market almost perfectly.
According to blockchain data cited by the New York Post, the trader spent approximately $250,000 acquiring $LAPTOP tokens and later sold them for around $1.18 million.
That generated an estimated gain of approximately $930,000, before transaction costs.
The timing of the trades has fueled questions about how the trader managed to benefit from the token’s brief price spike.
However, blockchain activity alone does not establish that the trader was connected to Biden or the coin’s creators. Analysts continue to examine wallet activity surrounding the launch.
Hunter Biden blames liquidity problem
Hunter Biden has pushed back against criticism of the project, blaming what he described as a major error involving the token’s initial liquidity.
Fox Business reported that Biden said a “f— up” occurred during the launch after the market maker supplied only about $5,000 in liquidity, far below what was needed to handle the initial demand.
That limited liquidity helped create extreme price movements. As buyers rushed into the token, its price surged sharply. Once selling accelerated, however, the same thin liquidity contributed to an equally dramatic collapse.
Biden has denied personally profiting from the crash and has argued that the project’s token allocation and contract information were publicly disclosed.
Critics raise rug-pull concerns
The collapse has nevertheless prompted accusations that $LAPTOP resembled a classic cryptocurrency rug pull.
A rug pull generally occurs when insiders or developers take advantage of a sharp price increase and then sell or withdraw liquidity, leaving other investors with rapidly declining assets.
One executive quoted by the New York Post described the episode as a “classic rug pull.” But available reporting has not established that Biden or his associates engaged in such conduct.
The distinction is important because a cryptocurrency suffering a sudden collapse does not, by itself, prove that its creators manipulated the market.
Why Hunter Biden launched $LAPTOP
The $LAPTOP name is directly connected to the computer controversy that became a major issue during the 2020 election.
Biden presented the token as an effort to reclaim a symbol that had been used against him and his family. The project’s slogan referenced turning the laptop controversy into a cryptocurrency.
The launch also placed Hunter Biden within a growing group of political figures and public personalities experimenting with meme coins.
Such tokens can attract enormous attention because of their associations with recognizable names, but they can also experience extreme volatility and limited long-term utility.
$LAPTOP joins volatile political crypto market
Hunter Biden’s coin is not the first politically connected cryptocurrency to experience a dramatic reversal.
Donald Trump’s $TRUMP meme coin has also experienced a substantial decline from its earlier highs, illustrating the risks surrounding celebrity- and politician-linked digital assets.
For $LAPTOP investors, however, the immediate issue is the scale of the collapse.
A coin that initially generated enormous interest has now become the subject of investor losses, questions about liquidity and scrutiny over the identity of traders who benefited during its brief surge.
Hunter Biden has continued defending the project, while critics argue that the episode demonstrates the dangers of speculative meme coins.
For now, the mystery surrounding the trader who reportedly made roughly $930,000 is adding another layer to one of the most controversial political cryptocurrency launches of 2026.
