A hiker discovered the remains of two people on Georgia’s Mount Yonah, prompting an investigation as officials work to determine their identities and deaths.
CLEVELAND, Ga. — A hiker made a disturbing discovery on a popular Georgia mountain when the remains of two people were found, prompting investigators to launch an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
The remains were discovered Wednesday morning on Mount Yonah in White County, according to the White County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities have not yet identified the two people or determined how they died.
The discovery has brought state investigators to the mountain as officials work to determine who the victims were, how long they may have been there and what led to their deaths.
Hiker makes grim discovery on Mount Yonah
The remains were reported at approximately 11:20 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9, on Mount Yonah, according to the sheriff’s office.
White County sheriff’s investigators responded to the scene along with personnel from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Region 8 Crime Scene Unit was subsequently called in to assist with the examination of the area.
Authorities have released few details while the investigation remains in its early stages.
Identities of the two people remain unknown
Investigators have not publicly identified either person whose remains were discovered.
Officials also have not released their ages or genders, and it remains unclear how long the remains had been on Mount Yonah.
The lack of information has left investigators with several unanswered questions as they work to establish the identities of the deceased and reconstruct what happened before their deaths.
The sheriff’s office has indicated that additional information will be released as it becomes available.
Officials have not said whether foul play is suspected
One of the central questions surrounding the case is whether the deaths resulted from an accident, natural causes or criminal activity.
At this stage, the White County Sheriff’s Office has not said whether foul play is suspected.
Authorities also have not disclosed a cause or manner of death.
That means investigators have not publicly characterized the discovery as a homicide, and conclusions about how the two people died would be premature until forensic work is completed.
Georgia Bureau of Investigation joins probe
The involvement of the GBI’s Region 8 Crime Scene Unit signals that investigators are conducting a detailed examination of the location.
Crime scene specialists can help document evidence, process the area and assist local authorities with identifying remains and determining circumstances surrounding a death.
The investigation could ultimately depend on forensic testing and information gathered from the mountain.
Officials have not announced when the identities of the two people could be released.
Mount Yonah is popular with hikers
Mount Yonah is located in northeast Georgia near the communities of Helen and Cleveland.
The mountain is a popular destination for hikers, making the discovery especially unsettling for people familiar with the area.
Its rugged terrain can make portions of the mountain difficult to access, while the surrounding landscape provides a large area for investigators to examine.
The discovery was made by a hiker rather than during a previously announced search, according to the sheriff’s office.
Investigation remains ongoing
White County Sheriff Rick Kelley said investigators would provide additional information as it becomes available.
For now, authorities have not disclosed the identities of the deceased, the suspected cause of death or how long the remains had been at the location.
The county coroner’s office is also expected to play a role in determining the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
As forensic examination continues, investigators will likely seek to establish the identities of the two people and determine whether their deaths were connected.
The discovery on Mount Yonah has turned a popular hiking destination into the center of an unfolding investigation, with authorities still working to answer the most basic questions surrounding the case.
