Chazz Palminteri rips Sonny Gray over their Yankees encounter and recalls a surreal Robert De Niro moment during a recent interview.
Chazz Palminteri Targets Sonny Gray
Chazz Palminteri sharply criticized Sonny Gray while discussing their memorable encounter during Gray’s Yankees tenure.
The actor described meeting Gray while promoting his restaurants, but said the pitcher seemed uninterested.
Palminteri recalled approaching Gray with enthusiasm before receiving what he characterized as a dismissive response.
That encounter apparently stayed with Palminteri, who later connected it with Gray’s difficult Yankees history.
Palminteri Questions Gray’s Bronx Record
Palminteri pointed to Gray’s 6.98 home ERA during his Yankees tenure while discussing his struggles.
He argued that Gray struggled under pressure in New York, especially during appearances at Yankee Stadium.
Gray joined Boston after his earlier Yankees stint and now prepares for another postseason appearance.
Palminteri specifically questioned Boston’s decision to use Gray in Game 2 rather than opening Game 1.
Sonny Gray Faces Yankees-Related Spotlight
Gray’s Yankees chapter remains an important part of Palminteri’s criticism during the recent conversation.
Palminteri acknowledged Gray’s success elsewhere while maintaining that New York presented unique challenges.
The actor’s comments came before Gray’s expected Game 2 assignment against the Yankees in October.
Why Sonny Gray’s Yankees Past Matters
Gray spent parts of three seasons with New York before leaving the organization following the 2017 campaign.
His Yankees tenure produced inconsistent results, although his career later included significant success elsewhere.
Palminteri’s criticism therefore focused specifically on Gray’s New York performance rather than his entire professional career.
Gray eventually established himself as a prominent starter after moving beyond his Yankees experience.
Palminteri Recalls Robert De Niro Story
During the same conversation, Palminteri shifted from baseball criticism toward his extraordinary Hollywood history.
He recalled developing A Bronx Tale alongside Robert De Niro during the project’s early stages.
Palminteri wrote the original story after developing it from his acclaimed one-man stage production.
De Niro later directed the 1993 film and portrayed Lorenzo, Palminteri’s character’s father.
A Surreal Moment With De Niro
Palminteri described realizing the significance of De Niro’s involvement after an unexpected conversation about his life story.
He remembered learning that De Niro wanted to make his story into a movie and portray his father.
The revelation left Palminteri stunned, particularly because he had already worked alongside De Niro.
Palminteri also joked about declining De Niro’s invitation to lunch before recognizing the moment’s importance.
From A Bronx Tale to Baseball Talk
Palminteri’s conversation moved between Hollywood memories, New York sports, and his personal experiences.
His connection to the Bronx shaped both his acting career and his perspective on New York sports.
The Sonny Gray discussion reflected that longtime connection while revisiting one of baseball’s familiar New York storylines.
Meanwhile, the Robert De Niro anecdote offered a completely different glimpse into Palminteri’s career.
Both stories connected through Palminteri’s experiences in New York, entertainment, and the personalities he encountered.
Sonny Gray Remains Part of the Story
Gray now enters another postseason chapter after building a career far beyond his Yankees struggles.
Palminteri’s comments add another memorable voice to the continuing discussion surrounding Gray’s time in New York.
The actor’s personal account, however, reflects his own experience and opinion about their brief encounter.
Gray’s upcoming postseason performance will ultimately provide the next chapter in his ongoing baseball story.
