Ed Sheeran’s Gillette Stadium shows were canceled over severe weather, adding another setback to a U.S. tour already facing major controversy surrounding changes to his lineup.
Severe weather forces concert cancellations
Sheeran was scheduled to perform at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, on Sept. 25 and 26. The two concerts were canceled after severe weather warnings were issued across Boston and New England.
The tour promoter said the decision followed consultations with local officials and was made with the safety of fans, staff and everyone involved in the concerts as the top priority.
Fans who purchased tickets are eligible for refunds. Those who bought tickets through Ticketmaster are set to receive automatic refunds, according to the stadium’s announcement.
No rescheduled dates announced
The cancellation leaves Sheeran’s fans waiting for information about whether the Gillette Stadium performances will eventually be rescheduled.
The shows had been among the most anticipated stops on his current U.S. tour, but the latest disruption comes after several difficult weeks surrounding the tour.
Tour already facing major changes
The weather cancellation arrived after a controversy involving Macklemore, who had been scheduled as one of Sheeran’s opening acts.
Macklemore made pro-Palestinian comments during performances at MetLife Stadium earlier in September. He was subsequently removed from the remaining tour dates, while Sheeran’s other opening acts and touring musicians later withdrew from the tour.
The lineup changes created additional uncertainty for fans who had purchased tickets expecting to see the original supporting performers.
Refund questions added to the turmoil
The Massachusetts attorney general’s office said Ticketmaster agreed to allow refunds for the Gillette Stadium shows following complaints connected to the significant lineup changes.
That development came shortly before the concerts themselves were canceled because of the weather.
The cancellation therefore adds another layer to an already complicated period for Sheeran’s U.S. tour.
Sheeran previously addressed the controversy
Sheeran has publicly discussed the turmoil surrounding his tour and the departure of the supporting acts.
During a September performance in Philadelphia, he acknowledged that the situation had left him questioning whether the tour would continue and whether he wanted to keep performing.
The singer also said he had faced difficult decisions as the controversy unfolded.
What happens next for Ed Sheeran?
For now, the immediate issue is the status of the canceled Gillette Stadium concerts. The severe weather is the stated reason for the cancellation, and officials have not announced replacement dates.
The latest development adds to an unusually turbulent stretch for Sheeran’s U.S. tour, which has already experienced lineup changes, public criticism and refund concerns.
Fans who were scheduled to attend the Foxborough shows will now have to wait for further information about any potential rescheduling while refunds are processed.
