Patrick Clancy reveals whether wife Lindsay asked for forgiveness after killing their three children
In his first in-depth interview since the devastating tragedy that shattered his family, Patrick Clancy opened up about the emotional aftermath, his faith, and whether his wife, Lindsay Clancy, ever asked for his forgiveness after strangling their three young children.
In January 2023, Lindsay Clancy, a 32-year-old labor nurse from Duxford, Massachusetts, strangled her three children—5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 8-month-old Callan—before leaping from a second-story window in a attempted suicide attempt. Lindsay survived the fall but was left paralyzed from the waist down, later facing three counts of murder as her defense argued she was suffering from severe postpartum psychosis.
Speaking openly about his agonizing journey through grief, Patrick addressed the deeply personal question of reconciliation and communication with his wife following the tragedy.
‘I gave forgiveness to her, not for her’
When asked directly whether Lindsay had formally requested his forgiveness during their sparse communications following her hospitalization and arrest, Patrick shared a nuanced reflection on his path toward healing.
Patrick revealed that while Lindsay expressed profound remorse and devastation over what had transpired, his choice to extend forgiveness was a decision he made independently to survive the overwhelming pain.
“I gave forgiveness to her, not for her,” Patrick explained during the interview, emphasizing that his decision to forgive was rooted in his understanding of the severe mental illness that gripped his wife at the time of the event. “It was something I needed to do for my own soul and to carry on honoring Cora, Dawson, and Callan.”
He noted that Lindsay’s emotional state was defined by shock, confusion, and horror at her own actions once the psychotic episode subsided, rather than a formal request for absolution.
Navigating unimaginable grief
Patrick detailed the crushing loneliness of returning to an empty home and the struggle to reconstruct a life after losing his entire family in a single afternoon. He recalled the joy his three children brought into his life, sharing fond memories of Cora’s warmth, Dawson’s humor, and baby Callan’s gentle spirit.
Despite the unimaginable nature of the loss, Patrick has focused his efforts on mental health advocacy and establishing charitable initiatives in memory of his children.
“I choose to remember how they lived, not how they died,” Patrick said. “That is the only way I can walk forward each day.”
Lindsay Clancy remains under medical and legal supervision as court proceedings regarding her trial and mental health treatment continue.
