Rock frontman Damon Albarn sends pointed message after Macklemore ousted from Ed Sheeran tour
TAMPA, Fla. — Gorillaz and Blur frontman Damon Albarn made a bold statement on stage during a concert in Florida, holding up a Palestinian flag and urging fans never to stay neutral—in what appeared to be a direct response to rapper Macklemore’s recent removal from Ed Sheeran’s stadium tour.
Addressing the audience while draping the Palestinian flag over his shoulder, the British musician delivered a stark message to the crowd.
“Don’t forget this. Ever. Stand your position. Don’t ever be neutral,” Albarn told concertgoers.
A growing rift over political messaging in music
Albarn’s onstage display comes on the heels of major fallout within the music industry after Macklemore was dropped from Ed Sheeran’s “The Loop” tour following controversial pro-Palestinian remarks and the performance of his protest track, “Hind’s Hall.”
While venue organizers and stadium officials faced pushback for removing the rapper, Sheeran addressed the situation during a concert performance over the weekend, seeking to clarify his stance.
“I’ve tried in my career to not be a political commentator of any kind because I want my music and shows to be about unity, not division,” Sheeran told his audience. However, he added, “This is a humanitarian issue… What happened in Israel at a music festival on Oct. 7 was horrific… What is happening in Gaza is catastrophic and unjustifiable.”
History of outspoken activism
For Albarn, the gesture marks his latest public expression of support for Palestinian causes. The Gorillaz frontman previously participated in the “Together for Palestine” benefit event and used his platform during the 2024 Glastonbury Festival to rally support for the Palestinian people during his performance.
Neither representatives for Gorillaz nor Ed Sheeran have issued further official commentary regarding the concert incident.
