.New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill is facing renewed criticism over the state’s immigration policies after a driver fleeing a federal immigration operation crashed into a vehicle carrying the wife of East Brunswick Mayor Brad Cohen.
The crash happened Wednesday morning on Route 130 in North Brunswick. According to authorities, federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents had stopped the driver during a targeted operation before the vehicle sped away.
Police said the driver ran a red light and collided with another vehicle. Dr. Penelope Cohen, the mayor’s wife, was among those injured and was taken to a hospital for treatment. Authorities said the injuries were minor.
Crash reignites New Jersey sanctuary policy debate
The incident has intensified a political fight over New Jersey’s limits on cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities.
Republican lawmakers have criticized Sherrill’s administration and argued that the state’s immigration policies make it more difficult for ICE to carry out enforcement operations.
Assemblyman Paul Kanitra, R-Point Pleasant Beach, told Fox News Digital that the crash was another example of what he considers the public-safety risks associated with New Jersey’s sanctuary policies.
The criticism centers on the state’s Immigrant Trust Directive, which generally limits state, county and local law enforcement agencies from assisting federal authorities with immigration-enforcement activities.
What happened during the ICE operation?
ICE said agents conducted a vehicle stop on September 2 as part of a targeted immigration enforcement operation in North Brunswick.
According to an ICE spokesperson cited by CBS News, the driver allegedly refused to leave the vehicle or comply with officers’ commands. Agents attempted to remove the individual after repeated warnings, the agency said.
The vehicle subsequently fled and crashed on Route 130. The driver ran from the scene but was later taken into custody by federal agents.
North Brunswick police emphasized that local officers were not involved in the original federal operation. Police said they responded only after the crash to handle the collision and related public-safety issues.
Mayor’s wife injured in collision
Penelope Cohen, the wife of East Brunswick Mayor Brad Cohen, was driving a Tesla when the fleeing vehicle struck it, according to local reports.
She suffered a leg injury and received hospital treatment. The mayor declined to comment publicly on the incident beyond saying he was focused on his wife’s recovery.
The circumstances have attracted significant political attention because the victim is the spouse of a Democratic mayor while New Jersey’s immigration enforcement policies are being debated at the state and federal levels.
Republicans demand tougher cooperation with ICE
Republican critics say the crash demonstrates why New Jersey should reconsider restrictions on cooperation between local authorities and federal immigration officials.
Kanitra and state Sen. Mike Testa have argued that stronger coordination with ICE could improve enforcement and public safety. Their comments come amid a broader national dispute over sanctuary policies and the role of local police in federal immigration enforcement.
Democratic officials and immigration advocates have taken a different position, arguing that local law enforcement should maintain community trust and focus on state and local responsibilities rather than federal immigration enforcement.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision and the driver’s alleged attempt to flee the ICE operation.
