The Dallas Cowboys were flagged after linebacker DeMarvion Overshown delivered a hard hit on New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart during Sunday night’s season opener, triggering a heated confrontation between the NFC East rivals.
Dart scrambled toward the Giants sideline early in the game before Overshown hit him in the area just beyond the boundary. Giants players immediately reacted, confronting the Cowboys linebacker as players from both teams rushed into the altercation.
Officials eventually restored order and assessed Dallas an unnecessary roughness penalty.
Jaxson Dart takes big hit
The incident occurred during the first quarter as Dart escaped the pocket and took off running along the left side of the field.
The Giants quarterback had already gained significant yardage before reaching the sideline, where Overshown made contact and sent Dart into the area beyond the playing field.
The hit immediately drew the attention of Giants players, who appeared unhappy with the contact on their quarterback.
Dallas players then moved in to defend Overshown, producing a large gathering of players along the sideline.
Cowboys receive unnecessary roughness penalty
The officials ultimately penalized Overshown and the Cowboys for unnecessary roughness.
The penalty added 15 yards to the Giants’ gain, making the play even more costly for Dallas.
The confrontation stopped short of becoming a prolonged fight, but the exchange underscored the intensity of one of the NFL’s most heated rivalries.
Players from both teams were seen pushing and shoving as officials intervened.
Dart avoids medical tent
One of the more notable developments came after the hit.
Despite the force of the collision, Dart was not sent to the blue medical tent for an evaluation following the play, according to the report.
That was particularly noteworthy because Dart had previously expressed frustration about being sent for medical evaluations after hard hits during the preseason.
During an August preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings, Dart had been evaluated after taking a big hit. He was ultimately cleared to return.
Giants answer with a win
Dart ultimately responded with a strong performance as the Giants opened their season with a 28-20 victory over the Cowboys.
The second-year quarterback completed 23 of 29 passes for 230 yards and three touchdowns while also contributing as a runner. New York controlled possession for more than 36 minutes and held Dallas’ offense in check for much of the night.
Isaiah Likely emerged as one of Dart’s top targets, catching eight passes for 78 yards and two touchdowns.
The victory also marked a successful debut for new Giants head coach John Harbaugh.
A heated start to the NFC East rivalry
The early confrontation added another layer to an already physical matchup between Dallas and New York.
While the hit resulted in a penalty rather than an ejection, the immediate reaction from both teams showed how quickly emotions can escalate when a quarterback takes a hard shot near the sideline.
