Ben Affleck’s Brutal Politics Verdict: ‘An Awful Job’ as Affleck explains disillusionment while Animals explores morality, compromise, family, and power today.!
Ben Affleck Delivers a Blunt Political Verdict
Ben Affleck’s Brutal Politics Verdict: ‘An Awful Job’ captures his view of politics while Animals examines morality, compromise, family, power.
Affleck says holding political office would be an awful job because years around politics left him deeply and personally disillusioned.
His comments arrive as Animals approaches its Netflix release, placing the actor inside a thriller centered on politics and family.
In Animals, Affleck plays Mark Kimball, an independent Los Angeles mayoral candidate whose young son becomes the target of kidnappers.
The crisis forces Kimball and his wife, played by Kerry Washington, toward dangerous choices while exposing secrets behind their lives.
Affleck also directed and co-wrote the movie, giving him greater creative control over its examination of morality and political compromise.
Affleck’s Political Disillusionment
Previously, Affleck supported several presidential campaigns, including efforts involving Al Gore, Barack Obama, and John Kerry during earlier national elections.
However, those experiences changed his perspective, leaving him increasingly skeptical about political systems, politicians, campaigning, and public expectations today.
Personally, he describes politics as exhausting and unrewarding, particularly when candidates must constantly perform for voters, cameras, and competing interests.
Affleck also argues that modern political campaigns often reward money, sound bites, cruelty, and provocative moments over meaningful public discussion.
Why Animals Focuses on Politics
The film uses a mayoral campaign because politics creates situations where characters may sacrifice personal principles while pursuing important goals.
Affleck wanted the story to examine how people rationalize difficult decisions when protecting something they consider more valuable personally today.
That question becomes especially powerful when Mark’s political ambitions collide with the desperate need to rescue his kidnapped young child.
The thriller therefore treats politics as more than background scenery, turning public ambition into pressure that tests private morality intensely.
Animals asks whether people remain committed to their values when personal consequences become frightening, immediate, and impossible to ignore completely.
Moral Compromise Takes Center Stage
Affleck believes individuals become especially vulnerable to compromise when they have something significant to lose personally during difficult circumstances.
That tension shapes Mark’s choices as his campaign, marriage, reputation, and family become increasingly connected throughout the unfolding crisis.
Affleck Rejects a Political Future
Despite his political history, Affleck says he has no interest in pursuing public office after witnessing the system’s difficult realities.
His decision reflects frustration rather than complete disengagement, because he continues exploring political questions through filmmaking and thoughtful storytelling.
Animals allows Affleck to investigate those concerns creatively without asking him to become another participant inside the political system.
The movie also explores marriage, family loyalty, personal sacrifice, and uncomfortable consequences created when moral boundaries begin collapsing around characters.
Animals Brings Politics Into Personal Crisis
Netflix will release Animals on October 9, giving audiences an intense thriller built around kidnapping, politics, family, and moral uncertainty.
Affleck’s performance places viewers alongside a candidate whose public ambitions suddenly become secondary when his family faces devastating danger.
Ultimately, his comments reveal why politics remains fascinating to him as a subject while remaining deeply unattractive as a career.
